How to stick to your exercise routine when you've lost your mojo

Yes it’s only been a couple of months, but now is the time that a lot of people give up on their New Year’s Resolutions. The gym will be looking a lot quieter from now on in, as apparently only 58.4% keep resolutions up after the second month.

So how do you become one of the few that carry on with their intentions? Here are some tips for sticking to it:

  • I’ve talked about goal setting and the importance of making them smart (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely), so take a look at what you originally wanted to achieve and see if it has those characteristics. It really doesn’t matter if you have to change the goal posts

  • Keep a check on your progress – make sure you’re monitoring your improvements as even the small changes will spur you on

  • Be patient – don’t give up at a first hurdle as you feel you haven’t got anywhere. Sustainable change doesn’t happen over night. It goes back to my first point of being realistic

  • Get support from your family and friends. Having others to encourage you to reach your goal will offer the element of ‘accountability’

  • Don’t just fit a trip to the gym / to a class in the diary sporadically. Put it in as a regular ‘meeting’ and try and stick to it

  • And finally don’t give up if you have a ‘blip’. It’s only human to slip up, but it takes courage to brush yourself off and get back on it. You’re still going for that goal - this will just make you stronger

So don’t be another statistic – keep it going and see those results!
