Exercise for older adults

This weekend I did a 2 day course with YMCAFit on how to adapt exercise for older adults. So whether they're just wanting to keep in shape and stay young (to look after grandchildren and the like) or whether they have illnesses / joint and bone problems and just want to be able to do regular day to day activities without difficulty, I now know how to help.

Interestingly 'old' is now actually classed as 70 and above. Probably not a surprise really, given that we're all living longer now. It does of course mean that we need to now look after ourselves for much longer and unfortunately there are a lot of ailments to combat/ try and avoid as we age. To keep a good quality of life, it really is important to lead a physically active life, even if it is just a walk to the shops, or a weekly game of bowls. And, it's never too late to start and could even add years to your life.

Just think about some of the benefits of exercise:

  • Reduced risk of heart problems and diabetes

  • Increased strength and flexibility which will in turn reduce the possibility of falling

  • Reduced blood pressure

  • Maintenance of independant living and wellbeing

  • Less stress and anxiety

  • Improved mood and self-esteem

From all this new knowledge I will be putting on classes specifically for people at this stage of their life, so watch this space. If you'd like to find out more about one-to-one sessions then please call me on 07980 554324 or send me a message on the contacts form
